Job Summary
The Shift Engineer – Ammonia Plant at Fatima Fertilizers Limited ensures safe, smooth, and efficient operation of the Ammonia production unit during assigned shifts. This role involves monitoring and controlling plant processes, supervising operators, coordinating field activities, and responding to process upsets, start-ups, shutdowns, and emergencies. The Shift Engineer ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and operational procedures while optimizing performance, minimizing downtime, and supporting maintenance and reliability initiatives.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise shift operations of the Ammonia Unit.

Ensure safe plant operations in line with SOPs, IMS, and Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems.

Monitor, control, and optimize process parameters via DCS and field instruments.

Conduct regular field rounds to identify abnormalities, equipment issues, and safety hazards.

Coordinate start-ups, shutdowns, and changeovers efficiently.
-
Issue work permits and ensure safe execution of field activities.

Respond promptly to process upsets, trips, and emergencies.

Review logbooks, lab analyses, and operating data to initiate corrective actions.

Support preventive maintenance activities and raise MWRs as required.

Participate in HAZOP/ PHA sessions, incident investigations, and safety audits.

Ensure environmental compliance, including emission and effluent control.

Maintain housekeeping and safe working conditions in the plant.

Train and mentor operators and junior staff during shifts.

Prepare shift reports and ensure accurate handover/takeover communication.
Required Knowledge & Skills
-
Strong understanding of Ammonia plant processes: Reforming, Shift, CO₂ removal, Methanation, Synthesis loop, Refrigeration.

Working knowledge of DCS and PLC-based operations.

Familiarity with process safety systems (PSM or EMS), PTW systems, and emergency response procedures.

Experience in plant start-up, shutdown, and troubleshooting techniques.

Ability to interpret PFDs, P&IDs, and process data.

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

Effective communication and team leadership abilities.

Ability to work under pressure and handle emergencies.

Basic computer skills (Excel, report generation, ERP/SAP systems).

Strong safety mindset and commitment to compliance.
Qualification & Experience

Education: B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering
-
Experience: 2–4 years of hands-on operations experience in Ammonia plants.

Experience in shift-based continuous plant operations preferred.

Exposure to DCS operations and field troubleshooting required.
Preferred / Additional Qualifications
-
Background in fertilizer or large continuous process plants.

Training in Firefighting, First Aid, PTW, HAZOP, PSM, EMS.

Experience handling plant start-ups and shutdowns.
